Storm Preparation

STORM PLAN FOR CASA BONITA GRANDE:
The potential for a Hurricane to impact South Florida is real.  We recommend you should perform the following tasks as you leave at the end of the season and also ask your home watch person to double check your unit.

  1. Close hurricane shutters and windows and lock all doors
  2. In some cases we can expect high winds and heavy rain.  Furniture left on any unprotected lanai can become airborne and break through the screens and cause significant property damage. You may want to bring your lanai furniture into your unit
  3. If you have any valuables in your storage lockers, you may want to bring them into your units
  4. Remove any loose articles in the parking area and move your bike into your unit
  5. Empty your freezer of meat and other items that might cause a problem if we are without power for a couple of days

If evacuation is necessary complete the following:

  1. Turn off the water in your unit
  2. Open the faucet in the bath tub/shower
  3. Turn off water on the ice maker
  4. Turn off the circuit breaker for water heater
  5. Turn refrigerator and freezer to the lowest setting so it will stay cold longer

In case of an imminent storm Casa Bonita Grande will take steps to secure the pool and patio tables and chairs.  We will also discontinue the use of the pool pump if a storm moves in our direction. In addition, both elevators are anchored on the 8th floor and are unavialble for use until the elevator well is cleared of any storm surge.

We suggest you follow the direction of the Emergency Management Department for the State of Florida.  We strongly encourage you to evacuate during both volunteer evacuations as well as mandatory evacuations.  As we have all seen from past devastating storms we cannot accurately predict wind speeds, rain volume, and recovery time.  Therefore, please error on the side of caution and evacuate if you feel there is a chance we will suffer damage or the loss of power.

For recovery after the storm you may want to create a storm survival kit.

  1. You should stock up on water, canned goods, batteries and flashlights as there is a potential for electric power outage as well as public water contamination.  Click on the Build a Kit - Ready.Gov link below for information on building your own storm survival kit
  2. Fill your bathtub and/or buckets with water that can be used for flushing toilets in the event we lose water to the building

Elevators
Please do not use the elevators during the height of the storm or immediately after the storm.  In the event of a power outage we DO NOT have an emergency generator.  Again, In case of an imminent storm, both elevators are anchored on the 8th floor and are unavialble for use until the elevator well is cleared of any storm surge. When evacuating the building please use the stairwells only.

Outer Doors
Please make sure all outer doors are secured in your unit as well as any common building doors you encounter.  Make sure they are properly latched to prevent the wind from catching them, causing extensive damage.
